BOSTON – March 19, 2026 – MassHousing has awarded $150,000 to support art and cultural opportunities for residents of seven Agency-financed rental housing communities across Massachusetts.

The Building Community Through Arts and Culture Program benefits approximately 1,400 residents by recognizing the power of art, design, and cultural identity to strengthen community bonds, encourage resident participation, and promote long-term housing stability.

Housing communities will partner with local artists and local organizations to complete the art installations.

"MassHousing is pleased to invest in these various artistic and cultural endeavors, which will all add vibrancy, foster a sense of belonging, and strengthen rental communities," said MassHousing CEO Chrystal Kornegay.

Grant applications were made available in 2025 to MassHousing-financed properties across the Commonwealth for up to $40,000 per site to apply for one of two tracks of awards.

The first track involved temporary and semi-permanent activations or installations that enliven shared spaces, such as murals, planters, community-designed seating areas or small public art displays co-created by residents.

The other track involved larger-scale design projects that permanently enhance outdoor or indoor common areas, such as redesigned courtyards, lighting improvement, and wayfinding art.

The property management companies participating in the program are WinnCompanies, Peabody Properties, Beacon Communities, and North Shore Community Development Coalition and Punto Urban Art Museum.

The rental communities receiving grants are:

St. Stephen’s Tower, Lynn, $8,500 for an art workshop and display.

Highland Glen Apartments, Westwood, $13,700 for the installation of a resident gallery.

Bedford Towers, New Bedford, $40,000 for the revitalization of outdoor gather spaces, a basketball court and murals.

Market Mill Apartments, Lowell, $30,000 for indoor murals and community art making.

Hawthorne Lofts, Salem, $20,000 for an indoor mural in the site's auditorium.

North Village, Webster, $8,000 for utility wraps, outdoor community space and indoor murals.

The Wellington, Worcester, $30,000 for murals, landscaping and seating.
