The Morris Family, Carpenter's Glen

A photo of Courtney Morris

There were times Courtney Morris lay awake in a Fall River homeless shelter wondering if she would ever find a permanent, affordable home where she could live with her mother and two daughters.

"Sometimes it feels hopeless and depressing that you are in this situation," said Courtney, a single parent with two young daughters. "Then you have people like Carl working to make realistic situations for people in my position."

Carl is Carl Nagy-Koechlin, the Executive Director of Housing Solutions for Southeastern Massachusetts, who along with HallKeen Management worked to place Courtney and her family in an affordable three-bedroom apartment at Carpenter's Glen in Taunton, a 32-unit affordable housing community that recently underwent a major renovation.

MassHousing provided $1 million from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund as part of the $10 million refinancing and renovation of the Housing Solutions-owned Carpenter's Glen and the 24-unit Cranberry Manor in neighboring Wareham.

"I signed a lease and we were no longer homeless," said Courtney, citing the hard work of Housing Solutions and HallKeen. "They handled my desperation with the utmost dedication and compassion. I am blessed and honored to be here."

"Projects like these can be an ordeal," said Nagy-Koechlin. "These projects took over four years to complete. But that's time very well spent when you know you're providing homes to families like Courtney's."

Now that Courtney and her family are settled in their new home, she said she can "reach for all the opportunities in front of me. I want to be gainfully employed and increase my opportunities for education. And now I am in a position to be able to offer that to my children."
