Kelly Herrera put in the extra work necessary to be able to purchase a home in Lynn for her family.

Working with Leticia Rave at East Boston Savings Bank, Kelly purchased her home using a MassHousing Mortgage.

"I had a very good experience with Leticia and MassHousing," said Kelly. "Leticia was very helpful throughout the entire process."

Kelly, a supervisor for a home remodeling company, reduced some of her debt and received down payment assistance through the Federal Home Loan Bank's Equity Builder program. She obtained the MassHousing loan for 95% of her home's purchase price.

Kelly completed a homebuyer education class through Neighborhood of Affordable Housing, which helped her prepare for buying her single-family home.

"I worked with Kelly for almost a year after she came in and asked questions about buying a home," said Rave. "I told her to try to get rid of some of the credit card debt she had and to save as much money as she could. She worked hard to reduce her debt and that definitely helped her."

Kelly said the extra effort she put into buying a home certainly paid off. "It feels really good to own your own home and I would recommend MassHousing to other people like me who want to be a homeowner," she said.

Rave said first-time buyers like Kelly often need more help in preparing to buy a house but the extra effort is always worth it.

"I really enjoy working with first-time buyers," she said. "It's more work but to be able to see someone buy their first home is very rewarding."
